Russell has served most of the last decade on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Folklife Association and is proud to return to serve on the board again for 2012 /13 as the Vice -President. As an active folklorist, his work is focused on preserving and establishing the Muscle Shoals Music Tradition as a "living tradition". With the emergence of such Muscle Shoals based artists as, The Drive By Truckers, The Civil Wars, The Alabama Shakes, Jason Isbell, and more, that music scene is again poised to re-gain the prominence of the 1960's and 70's when the area was known as the "Hit Recording Capitol of the World". Anyone from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones might be seen going in and out of the studios to record what are now classic recordings using the local Muscle Shoals musicians and songwriters.

Every effort will be made to keep this page updated with current info on Folklife, not only from Muscle Shoals, but from around the state of Alabama, the efforts of the Alabama Folklife Association, and especially projects that Russell is directly involved in.
